I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Stickney when he was the College Access Coordinator for Austin High School in Houston ISD for several years. I was the director of recruitment for the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M. Collaboratively, we worked to identify high achieving students who had the interest and ability to pursue teaching as a career. Throughout our time together, he continuously opened doors of opportunity for students who had previously considered those options to be closed. He expanded the worldview of students beyond the limits of inner-city Houston to a world of hope and exciting potential by encouraging students to consider all options. There are many teachers working in Houston and across the state who owe the foundation to their career to the tireless work of Mr. Stickney. He is one of the strongest student advocates with whom I have worked in my 26-year career and I am glad we had the opportunity to transform young lives together.
